Hainan — Star-Moon Bodhi Mala, 108 Beads, Unprocessed

The star-moon bodhi seed is named for what appears on its surface when you look closely enough.

Star-moon bodhi seeds come from the tropical forests of Hainan Island, China’s southernmost province. The seed’s surface shows a pattern of small dots arranged around a central marking: the dots are the “stars,” the central mark is the “moon.” Hainan-grown seeds are considered superior to mainland varieties for their density and the clarity of the star-moon pattern. This strand is mao gan — unprocessed, the natural oils and surface texture of the seed preserved entirely. No defatting, no polishing, no intervention. The patina that develops is produced entirely by handling.

108 is the number of beads on a traditional Buddhist mala — the number of earthly desires to be overcome, the number of times a mantra is recited in a complete cycle. The bodhi seed tradition connects Hainan to a network of Buddhist practice that runs from Sri Lanka to Japan, carried by monks who moved between monasteries and brought their beads with them. A strand of 108 is not a bracelet. It is a counting instrument.

This strand is unprocessed mao gan — the surface slightly rough, the star-moon pattern visible on each bead. The patina already present shows what continued handling will produce: a deep, ceramic-like surface that collectors call ci hua, porcelain transformation. The strand can be worn wrapped multiple times around the wrist, or used as a full mala for practice.
