In 1513, the first Chinese porcelain arrived in Lisbon. Europe had never seen anything like it.

Jingdezhen porcelain has been produced continuously for over a thousand years in Jiangxi province, China. The city sits above deposits of kaolin — the specific white clay that gives true porcelain its translucency and its ring when struck. European ceramicists spent two centuries trying to replicate it, failing repeatedly, until a German alchemist accidentally discovered the formula in 1708. By then, Jingdezhen had already forgotten more about porcelain than Europe would ever learn.

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to trade directly with China, and the first to bring Chinese porcelain back in quantity. What arrived in Lisbon changed European taste permanently — the blue-and-white aesthetic that defines so much of Western decorative art traces back to those ships. The kilns in Jingdezhen never changed. They just kept burning.

These beads are fired in Jingdezhen using traditional methods. The surface is smooth and slightly cool, with a faint translucency at the edges where the glaze is thinnest. The weight is lighter than stone, heavier than glass. Each bead rings faintly when they touch.
