Xiangxi Cinnabar Bracelet — The Horse

In southern China, red has never been a simple colour.

Cinnabar is mercury sulfide — a naturally occurring mineral that produces one of the most saturated reds found in nature. It has been mined in Hunan and Guizhou provinces for over three thousand years. Taoist priests ground it into pigment for protective talismans. Imperial seal-makers pressed it into ink. Alchemists believed it held the secret to immortality — which is ironic, given that mercury is toxic. The deep red you see in this bracelet is not dye. It is the mineral itself, shaped into beads.

Xiangxi — the western corner of Hunan province — is where this mineral and its mythology run deepest. The region is known outside China mostly through fiction: the corpse-driving rituals of Taoist priests, the night roads through karst mountains, the idea that certain materials can hold a boundary between the living and whatever comes after. Cinnabar is one of those materials. It appears in every account.

This bracelet is made from zijinsha — a variety of cinnabar with a deeper, more complex tone than standard red cinnabar, closer to oxblood than vermillion. The 18k gold horse charm sits at the clasp point, small enough to be subtle. Four pale nephrite jade beads act as spacers — cool against the warmth of the red. The contrast is not accidental.
