Obsidian is not a mineral. It is frozen fire.

Obsidian is volcanic glass — silica-rich lava that cooled so rapidly it had no time to crystallise. The result is a material with no grain, no cleavage plane, no internal structure: it fractures in any direction with equal ease, producing edges sharper than surgical steel. Mesoamerican civilisations — Olmec, Maya, Aztec — built entire economies around obsidian. The stone was currency, weapon, mirror, and ritual object simultaneously. The rainbow sheen variety contains microscopic layers of magnetite that produce an iridescent optical effect: a band of colour — gold, green, purple — that moves across the surface as the viewing angle changes.

The obsidian trade routes of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica are among the most extensively documented ancient trade networks on earth. Obsidian from central Mexican sources has been found as far as the American Southwest and Central America. The stone moved because nothing else cut like it. The rainbow sheen variety was reserved for mirrors used in divination — the surface that showed what was not visible to the naked eye.

These beads are cut from rainbow sheen obsidian — the iridescent band visible on each bead, shifting position as the bracelet moves. The base colour is deep black. The sheen appears and disappears depending on the angle of light. No two beads show the sheen in exactly the same position.
