Taihang Mountain arborvitae grows along the spine of northern China — a range that runs between the North China Plain and the Loess Plateau. The altitude and dry climate produce a wood with different properties from its Sichuan counterpart: lighter in colour, softer in texture, with a quality that carvers describe as luminous — the wood appears to glow faintly under direct light, an optical effect produced by the density and arrangement of its grain.

Both Sichuan and Taihang arborvitae belong to the same botanical family as the cedar that appears in the oldest human story ever recorded. The connection is not metaphorical. It is taxonomic.

This bracelet is cut from Taihang Mountain arborvitae selected for its luminous grain. The surface has a softness unusual for wood — closer to the feel of polished bone than timber. The fragrance is mild and clean, without the medicinal intensity of the Sichuan variety. The beads warm quickly against skin.
