Xinjiang — Hetian Qinghua Seed Jade Bracelet, Ink-on-Snow

White jade with black inclusions is not a flaw. It is a different stone entirely.

Qinghua — literally "blue-flower" — is the name given to Hetian nephrite that contains graphite inclusions distributed through white or near-white material. The black appears in patterns that range from fine speckling to bold brushstroke-like sweeps, the white ground remaining the same warm, slightly translucent nephrite that defines quality Hetian material. The Chinese have compared it to ink dropped in snow, or to the negative space in a Song Dynasty landscape painting: the black is not decoration applied to the stone, but part of the stone itself, formed over millions of years in the same geological process that produced the white.

Seed jade — ziliao — refers specifically to nephrite pebbles collected from riverbeds rather than quarried from the mountain. The Yurungkash River carries nephrite down from the Kunlun Mountains; the river tumbles the stones for thousands of years, removing the weak material and leaving only the dense, tough core. The skin that forms on a river pebble — the natural weathered surface — is considered evidence of authenticity and is often preserved in carving.

These beads are cut from qinghua seed jade — each bead showing a different distribution of black graphite against white nephrite. No two beads are the same. The surface is polished to show the contrast between the warm white ground and the deep black inclusions. The weight is characteristic of quality seed material: heavier than it appears.
