The carvers of Anatolia work with material most people throw away.

Olive pit carving is a craft that developed across the eastern Mediterranean over centuries — in Turkey, Greece, and the Levant. The olive pit, once the fruit is removed, has a dense, fibrous interior with a naturally ridged surface. Carvers discovered that this surface — which they call “sharkskin” for its texture — takes on a deep amber-brown patina with handling, darkening and smoothing over years of contact with skin. The pit becomes more itself the longer it is worn.

Cappadocia — the cave city region of central Turkey — sits in the heart of Anatolia’s olive-growing territory. The underground cities carved into volcanic rock here are among the oldest human habitations on earth. The people who carved those cities also carved olive pits. The scale is different. The instinct is the same.

These beads are selected for the “sharkskin” grain — the most pronounced surface texture, with ridges that catch light differently depending on angle. Each pit is hand-carved and lightly finished. The surface you feel now will not be the surface you feel in a year.
