The oldest tree in recorded human history is a cedar. It appears in the first story ever written down.

The Epic of Gilgamesh, composed roughly 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, describes a journey to the Cedar Forest — a vast, sacred woodland guarded by a monster, filled with trees so large their shadows covered mountains. Scholars believe this forest was in what is now Lebanon. The Lebanese cedar became the symbol of the region, appearing on its flag today. The tree itself is nearly gone — centuries of shipbuilding, temple construction, and deforestation reduced the ancient forests to a few protected groves.

Arborvitae — the genus that includes both Lebanese cedar and Chinese cypress varieties — carries the same dense, aromatic heartwood across species. Sichuan arborvitae grows in the river valleys of southwestern China, where the combination of altitude, moisture, and mineral-rich soil produces a wood with a medicinal fragrance that intensifies with age. The river grain variety develops distinctive burl patterns where the tree grew around obstacles.

This bracelet is cut from Sichuan river-valley arborvitae — the variety known for its burl formations and concentrated fragrance. The surface shows the natural growth patterns of the wood: no two beads are identical. The scent is medicinal and resinous, strongest when the wood warms against skin.
