Marrakech Craft — Natural Gourd, Aged Patina

The gourd is one of the oldest cultivated plants on earth — older than wheat, older than rice, older than writing.

Botanical evidence suggests that bottle gourds were being cultivated simultaneously in Africa and Asia over 10,000 years ago — before any known contact between the two continents. The same plant, the same uses: container, instrument, ritual object. Anthropologists call this a case of independent invention. The gourd didn't need human help to spread its logic across the world.

In Morocco, gourd craftsmen in the Marrakech medina have worked with dried gourds for centuries — carving, burning, and lacquering them into objects that carry the warmth of the material and the mark of the hand. In China, the tradition of pao qi — gourd craft — runs from imperial collections to street markets, the same instinct expressed across every social register.

This gourd has been allowed to age naturally — no carving, no lacquer, no intervention. The surface has developed a patina that moves from pale yellow to a warm orange-red, the colour produced by years of oxidation and handling. The form is the original form. Nothing has been added.
