Nepal — Phoenix Eye Bodhi Bracelet, Single Eye

The eye appears once on each seed. It cannot be moved or added. It is either there or it is not.

Phoenix eye bodhi — feng yan pu ti in Chinese — is a variety of rudraksha in which one of the seed's natural surface markings forms a distinct oval shape resembling an eye, complete with a central point. The marking is produced by the seed's internal structure — the point where the embryonic root was attached — and appears on only one face of the seed. Seeds where this marking is clearly defined, symmetrical, and centrally placed are selected for use; seeds where it is absent, faint, or off-centre are not. The selection rate is low.

The phoenix — feng huang — in Chinese tradition is not the same creature as the Western phoenix. It is a composite bird associated with the south, with summer, with the empress, and with the union of opposites: the male feng and the female huang together constitute the symbol. The eye of the phoenix — the single, clear, forward-facing eye — is associated in Chinese folk belief with clarity of perception and protection from deception. The seed that carries this marking is the seed that sees.

These beads are selected for the clarity and placement of the phoenix eye marking — each bead showing a distinct, well-formed eye on its primary face. The seeds are from the Himalayan foothills of Nepal, where the altitude and climate produce denser, harder rudraksha than lowland varieties. The surface develops a warm patina with handling.
