Philippines — South Sea Pearl Pendant, Natural Baroque

A pearl is the only gem made by a living thing in response to irritation.

South Sea pearls are produced by Pinctada maxima, the silver-lipped and gold-lipped oyster, which grows in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific — from the Coral Triangle of the Philippines and Indonesia through northern Australia. The oyster is the largest pearl-producing species in the world, and the pearls it produces are correspondingly large: typically 10–20mm, with a surface lustre described as satiny — softer and deeper than the mirror-bright lustre of Akoya pearls, more like light absorbed than light reflected. Baroque pearls — non-spherical, formed when the nacre layers build unevenly — are considered by some collectors to be more interesting than round pearls precisely because no two are identical.

The Sulu Sea, between the Philippines and Borneo, has been a pearl-fishing ground for over two thousand years. Arab traders reached it in the 9th century; Chinese merchants followed. The pearl trade made the Sulu Sultanate one of the wealthiest polities in Southeast Asia. The oysters that produced those pearls are the same species as the ones producing this pendant.

This pendant is a single baroque South Sea pearl — the irregular form preserved, the surface showing the characteristic satin lustre of Pinctada maxima nacre. The colour sits between white and cream, with a faint overtone that shifts between silver and rose depending on the light. The cord attachment is minimal, letting the pearl speak without interruption.
