Turquoise is named for the route it travelled, not the place it came from.

The word turquoise entered European languages through French — pierre turquoise, "Turkish stone" — because the stone reached Europe via Turkish merchants, not because it originated in Turkey. The finest historical turquoise came from Nishapur in northeastern Iran, mined continuously for over two thousand years. The colour range — from sky blue to blue-green — is determined by the ratio of copper to iron in the stone's composition. The variety called Nishapur blue or Persian blue is the most saturated: a pure, even colour with no matrix, no veining, just the stone at full intensity.

Turkey sits at the western end of the turquoise trade route — the point where the stone entered Mediterranean commerce. The Ottoman court used turquoise extensively in jewellery, tilework, and ceremonial objects. The same stone that decorated the Topkapi Palace arrived there from mines in Iran, carried by merchants who crossed Anatolia. The route is older than the Ottoman Empire by a thousand years.

These beads are selected for colour consistency — the blue even across the strand, without the brown matrix that appears in lower-grade material. The surface has a waxy finish characteristic of natural turquoise. The colour is stable; natural turquoise does not fade with light exposure.
